This is the story of Luna Hueca, The Hollow Moon
On November 20th, 1969, astronauts aboard Apollo 12 deliberately crashed the ascent stage of their lunar module onto the Moon’s surface, triggering the first man-made moonquake and the birth of a new conspiracy theory.
The moonquakes were unlike anything scientists had experienced on earth, causing the moon to “ring like a bell” for nearly an hour after impact. Conspiracists latched onto this idea, believing that the reaction caused by Apollo 12 could only happen if the Moon was hollow.

an alien spacecraft
In 1970, Russian scientists Vasin and Shcherbakov proposed that the Moon is a hollow spaceship created by ancient extraterrestrials.
Perhaps Vasin and Shcherbakov borrowed the idea from H.G. Wells’ 1901 novel, ‘The First Men in The Moon’, in which two protagonists discover that the Moon is inhabited by an alien civilisation of space-insects.
Whether the moon is made of cheese, inhabited by ancient aliens, or simply a planetary-mass object within our vastly unexplored solar system, the Hollow Moon conspiracy intrigued us.
It’s the inspiration behind Luna Hueca, meaning Hollow Moon in Spanish.
Luna Hueca is a testament to the creativity of humankind and our obsession with exploring the unknown.
